Pineal gland calcification

چکیده
Calcification of the pineal gland is shown to be closely related to defective sense of direction. In a tricentre prospective study of 750 patients lateral skull radiographs showed that 394 had calcified pineal glands. Sense of direction was assessed by subjective questioning and objective testing and the results noted on a scale of0-10 (where 10 equals perfect sense ofdirection). The average score for the 394 patients with pineal gland calcification was 3-7 (range 0-8), whereas the 356 patients without pineal gland calcification had an average score of 7-6 (range 2-10). This difference was highly significant (p<0-01). A smaller paraliel study in pigeons showed that pineal calcification also leads to a reduction in homing abilities. The findings suggested that the pineal gland plays an important part in directional sense and that damage to the gland, as indicated by calcification, causes defective sense of direction -perhaps by altering the intrinsic intracranial electromagnetic environment and thus affecting the magnetite response mechanism.

Background and Aim: Intracranial physiologic calcification is not accompanied by any evidence of disease and has no demonstrable pathological cause. It is often due to calcium deposition in the blood vessels of different structures of the brain. Computed tomography (CT) is the most sensitive means of detection of for this calcification. The aim of this study was the assessment of the intracrani...

PURPOSE Pineal gland calcification has been proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease. This study evaluated the prevalence and extent of pineal gland calcification in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of patients referred for dental implant therapy who could possibly be a vulnerable group for this condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective evaluation of 5...

H UMAN pineal gland calcification, which was reported in autopsy specimens about 300 years ago, was first described in the plain skull roentgenogram in 1918 by Sch#{252}ller,’6 who remarked that the gland “very often shows a calcium deposit from the third decade and occasionally even in children.” Subsequent workers confirmed Sch#{252}ller’s observation and established the influence of age on t...

The pineal gland is a unique organ that synthesizes melatonin as the signaling molecule of natural photoperiodic environment and as a potent neuronal protective antioxidant. An intact and functional pineal gland is necessary for preserving optimal human health. Unfortunately, this gland has the highest calcification rate among all organs and tissues of the human body. Pineal calcification jeopa...
